Elliot Lake council approves expenditures for ongoing arena rehabilitation

Elliot Lake Council held a special meeting last night for an update on the Rogers Arena and its repairs.

Special Projects Manager Bill Goulding says Timber Restoration Services is asking for $118,000 for ongoing roof work, Skyway Canada Limited wants $120,000 for the rental of shoring equipment and Electrical Service Cabinet needs $75,000 for new electrical installations, for a total of just over $300,000.

Goulding says some of the work continues, all the while ensuring the safety of the contractors and security of the structure, but the weather is slowing down the work.

He says as far as the foundation system goes, they are still looking at micro-piles, but the vendor won’t be back until March, so a sub-contractor is being put in place to ensure the testing continues and the original team will return to complete the work.

He adds there could be an additional expense for mitigating the effects of winter in the range of $350,000 to $600,000 depending on various weather factors and contractors.

Goulding says the delays due to winter conditions could also mean a delay in having the arena open by the end of summer.
