City buys back land originally meant for food bank

Elliot Lake city council has passed a bylaw to buy back a parcel of land originally meant for building a food bank.

Economic Development Manager Steve Antunes says the property was sold by the city to the Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank Incorporated in August of 2023.

He says through unforeseen construction costs and time requirements, the food bank board determined that construction on the site was not feasible and has decided to purchase an existing structure in the community.

Antunes adds the board met with council late last year to negotiate the sale of the land back to the municipality at the full sale price with the board covering the legal fees.

He says council voted unanimously to the Agreement of Purchase and Sale this past Monday and once the sale is closed, staff will begin marketing the lot for future development.
