A judge has ordered the federal government to extend funding to three Northern Ontario Indigenous police services.
Three policing agencies covering 45 First Nations have been operating without federal funding since March, after negotiations broke down.
The Friday ruling orders an immediate 12-month extension to the funding without “arbitrary” funding conditions and criticizes the Ministry of Public Safety for being inflexible.
The agencies had been nearing a total shutdown, leading the Anishinabek Nation to declare a state of emergency in June.
