Elliot Lake plans landfill expansion

Expansion of the landfill in Elliot Lake is moving ahead following council’s approval for continued operation.

Council gave its approval to a one-year contract for K.J. Beamish Construction to operate the landfill and recycling facility until May of 2019.

The city’s Manager of Environmental Services, Daryl Halloch says the city has received approval from the Ontario Ministry of Environment and Climate Change for a new environmental assessment.

The city’s operating budget for this year is about $415,000.

He adds the new agreement includes the same service level for $222,000 plus HST, a five per cent price increase over the old contract.

The cost to implement the expansion will range between $1.5 million and $3 million.

Without the expasion, the landfill will reach capacity in 2024, but the new plan will give the city another 20 to 25 years of use.
