Giving police the power to issue an immediate licence suspension is just one of 27 recommendations made by a coroner’s jury at an inquest looking into the death of an Elliot Lake man.
Walter George Blight, 72, died on July 16th, 2015, as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle collision in Killarney.
The five-member jury heard that Blight likely shouldn’t have been driving due to various medical conditions and that there is no law in place to immediately seize a licence if there are medical concerns about a driver.
One recommendation, if enacted, would give police the power, after getting approval from an MTO official, to issue a 24-hour licence suspension and another would allow doctors to file driver’s licence review requests.
After hearing from several witnesses, including a traffic expert, a geriatrician and a Ministry of Transport policy officer, the jury made 27 recommendations in all
