For the first time in Canada livestreaming and the archiving of the livestream video is being allowed in an Ontario Superior Court trial.
A court decision issued on January 5th will allow the electronic recording of the Robinson Huron Treaty Annuity case.
To support her order for unrestricted broadcasting, Supreme Justice Patricia Hennessy stated, “Collectively, as Canadians, we suffer a deficit in understanding our history and our relationship with our Indigenous neighbours.
“Creating and preserving an audiovisual record of this evidence increases its usefulness and accessibility. “It is a significant contribution to our national understanding,” she added.
At issue is the beneficiaries have received no increase to the four-dollar annuity since 1874, despite the financial profits derived from the Land that the governments have benefited from for over 140 years.
The hearings are open to the public and continue January 10th in Sudbury.
