Canada’s new Governor General, Julie Payette, is also the patron of The Royal Canadian Legion.
She received the symbolic first poppy of the 2017 National Poppy Campaign from David Flannigan, Dominion President of The Royal Canadian Legion on Monday at Rideau Hall.
Locally, Poppy Week was proclaimed by Elliot Lake Mayor Dan Marchisella, also on Monday.
Espanola Mayor Ron Piche (PEACH) will help raise the Poppy Flag at the town office this Friday morning at 11 am.
Poppies will also be available to the general public starting tomorrow.
Every year, over 20 million poppies are distributed across Canada to support programs and services for veterans and their families.
