Espanola council defers waste bylaw for six months

Espanola residents can keep using their green bags for a little while longer.

Espanola council deferred the motion to implement new bag limits at their meeting last night.

Some 35 people attended the meeting to voice their discontent with the proposed bylaw, which would have reduced bags from four to two per household per week, and change over to clear bags.

The Town wants to meet new guidelines the provincial government is putting in place in regards to waste management.

The bylaw was being considered to reduce waste to the landfill and encourage more recycling.

However, Councillor Ken Duplessis put forward a motion to defer the bylaw for at least six months to allow time for the town to educate the public about what will be expected of them.

Council unanimously passed the motion for the deferral.
