Sudbury District Health Unit has human case of West Nile Virus

A person has come down with West Nile Virus within the Sudbury District Health Unit’s jurisdiction.  The health unit says this is the third case of a human coming down with the virus since 2006.  Mosquitos pass the virus onto people through their bites after picking up the virus in the first place by feeding off infected birds. Only20 percent of people hit with West Nile show any symptoms which include fever, headaches and body pain as well as nausea and confusion.  The health unit says late summer is the greatest risk of contracting West Nile because mosquitos carry higher levels of the virus.  Also people take less precautions to protect themselves from mosquitos.  The advice from the health unit to avoid bites is wear light-coloured clothing, long sleeves and long pants as well as shoes and socks when outside.
