St. Joseph’s General Hospital in Elliot Lake says the Algoma Public Health has declared a facility-wide antibiotic-resistant outbreak at the hospital.
According to the health unit, Extended Spectrum BetaLactamase (BETA-lac-tah-miss) or ESBL as it is commonly called, is produced by bacteria that break down certain antibiotics, making infections difficult to treat.
The agency is working closely with the hospital to manage the situation and mitigate the spread of the virus.
Visitation is not restricted at this time, but all visitors and patients who enter the facility are required to wear a mask.
Masking stations can be found at each of the entrances.
