There are few World War Two veterans still with us, but a Lively man has proven his longevity with a 100-year-old birthday bash.
France GĂ©linas, the MPP for Nickel Belt met with Gerald Wagner yesterday to celebrate the milestone.
She says Wagner’s service in the Canadian Army included his involvement in the liberation of several European countries.
Wagner was born in the Pembroke area before moving to Sudbury with his father, a diamond drill foreman.
He married his partner of 65 years, Ivy, in a church in Creighton on the eve of the D-Day landing and was deployed to Italy shortly after where he served until the end of the conflict.
Ivy passed away in 2009.
After his service, Wagnar returned to the Sudbury area to work in the mining industry.
GĂ©linas says he will also be presented with the King Charles III Coronation Medal at another gathering this coming Saturday.
