Hugh Stevenson is the Conservative candidate for Sault Ste. Marie – Algoma Riding in the upcoming federal election.
Sources say Stevenson told the SSM Police Services Board Friday he was resigning as Chief of Police effective Sunday.
He is required to leave his position with the police service to accept the candidacy for the riding.
Yesterday, deputy chief Brent Duguay was named interim chief until a new police chief is selected.
Stevenson has been police chief since June 2018.
Liberal incumbent Terry Sheehan is seeking re-election.
NDP candidate Laura Mayer has also been nominated as a candidate.
