Miners poised to strike in Sudbury

Unionized Glencore workers in Sudbury are poised to take strike action at the beginning of February.
The union is currently in talks with Glencore to reach a new contract agreement for production and maintenance workers at the Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations (INO).
President of Sudbury’s Unifor Local 598 of the Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers’ Union, Eric Boulay, says the talks continue to reach a deal before the contract expires on February 1st.
He adds there are currently 679 workers in the bargaining unit, and the strike mandate was held with 97 percent in favour of hitting the picket lines if necessary.
The last collective agreement was reached four years ago.
The union has been representing workers at Glencore (previously Falconbridge) since 1942.
