Gore Bay’s East Bluff designated a nature preserve

Another area of Manitoulin Island has now been officially designated a nature preserve.

The Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy has designated Gore Bay’s East Bluff as a protected haven.

East Bluff is a 91-acre extension of the Niagara Escarpment, which includes shoreline, forested slopes, scarp face, and tableland.

Stretching about three kilometres along the shoreline of Gore Bay, it provides a sanctuary for orchids, ancient Eastern White Cedars, the at-risk Eastern Milksnake, and countless other sensitive species. Officials say protecting this landscape ensures a thriving future for wildlife and a peaceful retreat for all of us.

The designation came about under the auspices of the Wild Futures Campaign overseen by the conservancy.
