Truth and Reconciliation flag raising – weekend events

The Town of Espanola raised the Truth and Reconciliation flag late yesterday afternoon.

Espanola Mayor Doug Gervais and Deputy Mayor Angela Kelly were joined by municipal staff for the raising of the flag marking Orange Shirt Day and the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.

Gervais says the flag will fly over the weekend and invites everyone to come out to the local gathering on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Espanola Regional Recreation Complex.

Gatherings will also take place throughout the local area on Saturday including First Nations which will be hosting Sunrise Ceremonies and lighting Sacred Fires.

Other activities include a walk at Sagamok-Anishinabek First Nation at 10 a.m., a community feast at 11 a.m. at Aundeck Omni Kaning, another walk in Wiikwemkoong First Nation at 9 a.m. followed by the unveiling of a residential school memorial plaque at 9:45 a.m.
