School renamed for water walker Josephine Biidaasige Mandamin

The late Wiikwemkoong water walker Josephine Biidaasige Mandamin will be remembered with the renaming of a school.

The Durham District School Board of trustees voted to rename a Pickering-based school Biidassige Mandamin Public School, in recognition of Mandamin.

She was an advocate for water protection who took part in treks around the Great Lakes from 2003 to 2017 and received accolades including the Governor General’s Meritorious Service Cross in 2018.

The decision was based on a recommendation from the  Sir John A. Macdonald school naming committee.

The committee was comprised of local trustees, staff, students, a member of the Indigenous Advisory circle and community members.

The name change and new signage will be unveiled in late summer in time for the opening of the 2022-23 school year.

Mandamin passed away in February 2019.
