Special council meeting to discuss purchase of Algo Centre Mall

UPDATE -2:00PM: The motion to purchase the Algo Mall in Elliot Lake has been defeated.

City CAO Dan Gagnon told The Moose councilor Luc Cyr had declared a conflict of interest, so he recused himself from the vote this afternoon.

Following a in-depth discussion, council held a recorded vote and ended up with a 3 to 3 tie.

Gagnon says with the tie, the motion was defeated, so the purchase of the mall will not be moving forward in the current scenario.

Gagnon did not say whether there would be more discussions on the matter.

ORIGINAL POSTING: Elliot Lake Mayor Dan Marchisella has been advocating for buying the Algo Centre Mall property since the fall of 2017 when he first brought the idea before council.

The idea is back on the table, but this time with a solid offer.

The former Algo Centre Mall property, which is about 13.5 acres in size, purchase agreement will be discussed by council at a special meeting this morning at 9:30am in council chambers.

The agreement of purchase and sale is for $950,000 plus the city carries all the related costs including legal fees, and if council agrees to the purchase, could close by December 20th.

The Algo Mall garnered world-wide attention on June 23, 2012, when a segment of the rooftop parking deck collapsed into the building, crashing through the upper level to the ground floor below.
More than 20 people sustained non-life-threatening injuries and two people died in the collapse.

The meeting is open to the public.
