Fedeli says online pot legislation will be mindful of children

Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli says the public has nothing to worry about when pot is sold online this fall.

Fedeli was responding to a concern from Timiskaming-Cochrane New Democrat John Vanthof that young people could have access to the drug if checks and balances aren’t in place.

Fedeli says the Tories have taken this into account.

“The absolute underlying principle of the cannabis program in Ontario is the safety of the children,” Fedeli said.

Fedeli adds education will also be an important component of the upcoming legislation the Tories will introduce once the House resumes September 24th.

He says the staff will also be well trained.

Fedeli says the legislation to govern online sales will be in place when pot becomes legal October 17th

Afterward, the next phase will be retail outlets where the drug will be sold as of next April 1st.

Fedeli says municipalities, First Nations, law enforcement and health units will all have input in the proposed legislation.

They also have the option to opt out of the program.

In Ontario, marijuana users have to be at least 19-years-old once the drug becomes legal.
