Social services receiving GreenON funding

The Northern Ontario Service Deliverers Association is excited the province is providing $25 million in new funding through the Green Ontario Fund.

The money is coming from the province’s carbon market proceeds to help Ontario social housing buildings with less than 100 units invest in energy efficient retrofits.

Fern Dominelli, Chief Administrative Officer of the Manitoulin-Sudbury District

Services Board and Lead for the association out of Espanola, says given hydro costs across the North and the lack of natural gas service in many local communities, the program is a timely one.

He adds the implications that it has for local populations in terms of energy cost induced poverty are well suited to the needs in the North.

Previous programs focused on large buildings, few of which are located in Northern Ontario.
