Espanola council had a lively discussion last night in regards to a motion put on the floor by the Mayor to have the public decide on whether to go OPP or stay with municipal police.
Espanola Mayor Ron Piche says he would have liked to have held a referendum on the decision, but it is too costly, so he suggested taxpayers could vote on the matter on Election Day as a question on the ballot.
But, councilors voted down his motion stating they were elected to deal with such matters and that they have the expertise to make the final decision, especially with all the work that has gone into the process.
With the motion defeated, council has set a tentative date for a Public Policing Options Review for April 14th at 7:00pm at the Espanola Royal Canadian Legion
