The largest miner at the Ring of Fire continues to look for a northern community to host a smelter for the chromite it plans to mine. Noront Resources has formally asked Sault Ste. Marie if it’s interested and the city has said yes. Sudbury, Timmins and the Fort Williams First Nation are also in the running. The smelter would turn the chromite into ferrochrome which is used to create stainless steel products. The estimated cost to build a smelter is $1 billion.
