Four people have been arrested after trying to pass counterfeit money.
Last Tuesday morning, East Algoma and Espanola OPP officers and the OPP Canine Unit were alerted to a black sports utility vehicle with occupants who tried to pass counterfeit money at a general store in Webbwood and shortly after that, at a gas station in Massey.
Police stopped the vehicle on Highway 108, south of Elliot Lake shortly after noon.
The four occupants were arrested and searched with several counterfeit American $100 bills found on one of the women.
Officers then searched the vehicle and found a plastic bag containing over $4,500 of bogus U.S. $100 bills, a quantity of credit cards, female driver’s licences, several cheques with company names and credit card receipts.
Officers also found a small quantity of marihuana and alcohol.
As a result, the two men and two women from four southern Ontario cities were arrested and charged with a number of charges including possession of forged documents with intent, uttering counterfeit money, fraud under $5,000 and possession of marihuana.
Anyone with information is asked to call East Algoma Crime OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
