Wikwemikong has a milestone event next Wednesday. The community is breaking ground on a Victims of Violence Shelter for people who need a place to stay in an emergency situation. The shelter will be the first of its kind in Wiky and will provide services and shelters to victims of violence from across Manitoulin. Once operational, the facility will also shelter men. The shelter will be built just across from Genevieve Street which is the newer subdivision in Wiky. The two hour ground-breaking ceremony begins at 10:00am and will have several dignitaries on hand. The shelter is expected to open sometime during the fall of 2018.
